Benlik algısı bireyin iç dünyasının odağında yer alır. Çünkü içsel varlık / öz ben kendi bedeninin dünyadaki görünümüyle sürekli etkileşim hâlindedir. Benlik algısı adı verilen kavram insanın doğumundan itibaren başlayan ve kişinin kendi ile ilgili yarattığı imajı ifade eden sistemin çekirdeğidir. İçsel varlık / çekirdek ve öz ben genetik boyutu ve çevrenin kalıtımsal etkisinin birleşimidir. Dolayısıyla benliği açıklamak için “ben”in ne olduğuna ve kendisini nasıl resmettiğine odaklanmak gereklidir. Bireyin dünyaya dair birçok tespiti, öz varlığını temellendirmeyle ilintilidir. Öze ait olanı anlatma için bireyin çevresiyle mücadelesi yaşamını oluşturur.
