Abstract

AN EVALUATION OF THE USE OF MYTH-RITUAL THEORY IN FOLKLORE: THE MYTHOLOGY OF AL, SACI, THRESHOLD AND FIRE

In the first folklore studies, the text-centered Historical-Geographical Finnish Theory was generally used. It is known that through this theory, the variants of folklore products were examined based on their structure, subject and motifs. The theory that emerged as a continuation and complement of the Historical-Geographical Finnish Theory is the Myth-Ritual Theory. This theory tries to determine the connection of folklore with rituals and mythology. In this direction, the study first focused on the place and importance of the Myth-Ritual Theory in folklore studies, then within the framework of this theory, beliefs about “Al, Saçı, Threshold and Fire” in Turkish culture were examined. It was determined that each of these beliefs were related to rituals and myths, that “Al” was based on “Albıs”, the haired person of the evil spirit in mythology, that “Saçı” was for the purpose of respecting beings considered as God or holy spirits, that the threshold was based on a protective spirit, and that fire was based on salvation and purification from evil. Therefore, it has been determined that the use of Myth-Ritual Theory in folklore studies will highlight the aspect of folklore that provides unity and solidarity, and that this theory should be used to determine cultural identity and strengthen the sense of belonging.
