“BU BENİM ÖZ, BENİM ANA TOPRAĞIM”: JAMES CLARENCE MANGAN’IN TÜRK VE FARS EDEBİYATLARINI 19. YÜZYIL İRLANDA’SINA SUNUMU

Özet

This study analyzes an essay by James Clarence Mangan (1803-1849) on Turkish and Persian literature. The introduction provides an overview of the author, followed by an analysis of the essay’s primary ideas. It offers insights into the probable origins of Turkish-Ottoman literature, with particular attention to its poetic customs. Mangan asserted that, in contrast to Polish and Hungarian populations, the Turks possessed a rich oral storytelling and singing tradition. Furthermore, he observed that the language employed in such literature posed challenges for Western audiences, as exemplified by poet Baki’s use of figures of speech. Mangan’s perspectives on Turkish and Persian literatures differ from those of the Orientalists. His viewpoint suggests that perceptions of the East in 19th-century Ireland were predominantly positive.
