Abstract

WRITING ANXIETY OF CONVICT AND ARRESTED STUDENTS IN DISTANCE SECONDARY SCHOOL EDUCATION
Writing, one of the four basic skill areas in Turkish education, is the most important communication tool for students, which allows them to reflect their feelings, thoughts, imaginations and knowledge. This study reviews the writing anxiety of the convict and arrested students in Distant Secondary School Education, lodged at the departments of corrections no: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 and 8, located at the Compound of Department of Corrections in Silivri, in terms of age, crime type, birthplace and marital status. The “Writing Anxiety Scale” developed by Daly and Miller (1975), adapted into Turkish Zorbaz (2010), is used in the research as the data collection tool. The data is analysed with SPSS 17.00 package programme. The writing anxiety level score of the students in Distant Secondary School Education at the department of corrections was 110 maximum with an average of 74.21, based on the results of the study. It is observed that the students aged 38-43 enjoyed writing more, as the sub-dimensions are analysed according to age variable, as a result of the study conducted. No significant difference is identified as the sub-dimensions are analysed according to birthplace variable. It is inferred that married students enjoyed writing more than the single/unmarried students as the sub-dimensions are analysed according to marital status variable. It is concluded that the students charged with theft/robbery-seizure-looting and sexual assault enjoyed writing more than the students convicted of murder as the sub-dimensions are analysed according to crime type variable. It is concluded that the pleasure increases as the anxiety ‘that their writings will be read’ increases, the pleasure increases as the prejudice increases, the pleasure increases as the self-confidence increases and the pleasure increases as the overall score of writing anxiety increases when the relationship between the writing anxiety levels of the students is reviewed with the correlation analysis.
