Abstract

THE USE OF PUNCTUATION MARKS IN UZBEK TURKISH

In spoken language, emphasis and intonation are used to achieve more precise and effective expression, while in written language, punctuation marks are used to fulfil this function. The use of these marks is closely linked to all stages of grammar. It is known that the practices carried out according to phonetic, morphological and syntactic rules are also influenced by the semantic structure. In Uzbek Turkish, in addition to “punktiatsiya”, punctuation marks are studied under the title “ishorat qoidalari” (rules of punctuation), and they are classified according to their forms of use as limiting (chegaralovchi) and separating (ajratuvchi), and according to their places of use as at the end of a sentence (gap oxirida), within a sentence (gap ichida), and mixed (aralash holda). Within the framework of the basic rules established for punctuation marks, the article focuses on their use in Uzbek Turkish. Punctuation marks, which became more regular in Uzbek Turkish with the transition to the Latin alphabet in the second half of the 19th century, have an important function in conveying a text to the reader in a more precise and effective way. In Uzbek Turkish grammars, punctuation marks, which are the subject of the study of the branch of linguistics called “punktuatsiya / orthography”, are called “tiniq belgilari”. In this study, brief information is given about the historical process related to the use of punctuation marks in Uzbek Turkish, the usage areas of each punctuation mark are explained, examples suitable for the explanations are transferred to Turkish, and punctuation marks are given in accordance with their usage in Turkish in the translations.
