Abstract

MEANINGS GIVEN TO THE ARABIC FULK 'SHIP' IN THE HAREZM TURKISH TRANSLATION OF THE QURAN
Compared to other periods, the language relics belonging to Khwarezm Turkish period are relatively few. Recently, three translations of the Qur'an written in this historical dialect have been found out in the Astan-i Kuds-i Razavi Library in the city of Mashhad in Iran. Among them, the translation numbered 293 is different from the others. This work, which is copied from an older translated text, has been enriched in many places by adding new words used in historical dialects. Moreover, variants of words and suffixes in Khwarezm dialects were added, and by doing so the work was partially turned into a comparative grammar book. Although only the word kimi (ship) 'gemi' was given as the Turkish equivalent for the Arabic word 'fülk' in the source manuscript from which the work was copied, the copyist/author who has an enormous lexical knowledge and mastery of the historical dialects of Turkish added both kemi, the different usage of the word in Khwarezm accents, and çüng, kerāp and cihaz which are the equivalents of the word in historical dialects. In this article, these three words, which were misread in the book published by Şimşek in 2019 and left without interpretation in the dictionary, were examined, substantiated from historical and contemporary dialects, and their origins and meanings were also investigated.
