Abstract
THE NARRATION AND THE NARRATOR IN THE STORY BİR GÜLÜŞÜN KİMLİĞİ (THE IDENTITY OF A SMILE) OF HASAN ALİ TOPTAŞ
The main purpose of the narratology in the fictional texts as a communication means is to reveal the relationship among the elements forming the narration. Various literary works were written and several analysis methods were suggested regarding narratology developed in Europe and the US in the second half of the XX. century. In the Narrative Discourse: An Essay in Method of the French theorist Gérard Genette, he states that the narratology can not only be practiced in short stories, but also in the novels. He applies the theory he developed on In Search of Lost Time of Marcel Proust. It is possible to practice the theory of the Narrative Discourse developed for novel analyses on stories. In Genette’s theory, the aim is to learn the process of the text and the various traits of the narrator as narration. In this context, applying the theory of Genette in the story Bir Gülüşün Kimliği of Hasan Ali Toptaş can show us how the story is portrayed in terms of the narration and the narrator. The aim of the study is to examine the story Bir Gülüşün Kimliği of Hasan Ali Toptaş according to the theory of the Narrative Discourse while presenting the main framework of the theory Narrative Discourse of Gérard Genette.
