Abstract

INVESTIGATION OF THE TALES COMPILED AND WRITTEN BY PERTEV NAILI BORATAV IN TERMS OF GROTESQUE ELEMENTS
In this study, which aims to examine 48 fairy tale grotesque elements that are written and compiled by Pertev Naili Boratav, who carried out important studies on Turkish folk tales, document analysis was used as a data collection method. The data were also analyzed by the content analysis method. According to the obtained findings, while killing from violent acts takes the first place in terms of distribution, stabbing/poniarding/skewering and abdominal tearing is at the lowest level. In the analyzed tales, 4 different unusual creatures (giant, monster, dragon, conjoined men) were encountered. Also, only 3 grotesque places (cave, forest, and wild nature) have been identified. While an animal that does evil takes the first place among the grotesque figures, with the different frequency levels, husband and wife, men and witches in pursuit of evil are other grotesque figures identified. As a result, it is seen that the grotesque elements in the tales analyzed within the scope of the study are shaped according to the characteristics of Turkish fairy tales and grotesque elements are reflected in the content without breaking the traditional folk tales. Except this, it can be said that the gothic elements in tales carry the qualities and functions that can be utilized in the process of a child’s identity acquisition and educational mediums.
