Abstract

TRANSLATION STRATEGIES IN CULTURAL TRANSFER: COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF IDIOMS IN TURKISH TRANSLATION OF MİKHEİL CAVAHİŞVİLİ'S STORY CALLED “ÇANÇURA”
Although Turkish - Georgian relations have a few centuries of history, the literary relations between the two nations cover a recent period. Despite the presence of Turkish language departments at Tbilisi State University and Georgian Academy of Sciences, and its recognition in earlier periods, interest in Georgian literature in Turkey began in 1960s. In the Soviet era, many works of world literature were translated from Georgian to Turkish and from Turkish to Georgian. One of these works is the story of Mikheil Cavahişvili's “Çançura”. Published in 1903, the work was translated into Turkish in 1988 by the translator İbrahim Yavuz Goradze. In this study, we tried to express the culture transfer of the translation with idioms in (Çançura) by Mikheil Cavahişvili, one of the important writers of Georgian literature, which was translated from Georgian to Turkish. In this context, firstly, the definition, scope, function, and the relationship between translation and culture transfer are explained. Then, when comparing the expressions in the work depending on the culture transfer of translation relationship, the common uses of the translator, the different uses were determined and the errors which could be caused by one-to-one translation were shown by comparing the original of the work (Georgian) and Turkish translation. As a result of our comparison, we can say that the translation of the idioms given in the source text in the target language conforms to the content and carries out a translation understanding towards the target language reader in general.
