Abstract

ARMENIAN UPRISINGS IN MAMURATULAZIZ PROVINCE (1895)
1877-1878 The Ottoman-Russian War was an important turning point in Turkish-Armenian relations. The Armenians who were expecting independence or at least some sort of autonomy in the Congress of Berlin at the end of the war were disappointed with the peace treaty. Nevertheless, the fact that there was an article in the treaty which stated that the Ottoman Empire would make reforms in the territories where Armenians lived led them to have an expectation for the post-treaty period. By considering the conditions in which Ottoman Empire was, the government's efforts to extend the reforms over a period of time constituted an excuse for the Armenians to take action. The Armenians, who started preparations for an uprising, accelerated their organization and armament in the first phase. They completed their preparations by 1890 and moved to the action phase. The Armenians, who tried to show themselves through various incidents until 1894, made their first uprising in Sason in the same year. This uprising movement caused a series of successive new uprisings throughout the Anatolia. By reaching the peak in 1895, the Armenian uprisings were seen in many parts of the Anatolia. Among the 1895 uprisings there were four uprisings in Mamuratulaziz province. Respectively Eghin (15 September), Malatia (4 November), Harpoot (7 November), Arapkir (9 November) uprisings occurred within the borders of Mamuratulaziz province. In this study, the formation phases of these four uprisings occurred in Mamuratulaziz province, the measures taken against those by the government, their reflections in and out of the country, and its effects on the people are addressed.
