Abstract

AFFIXES IN TURKISH LOANWORDS ABSTRACT
Language is a means of communication and a systematic device that enables different communities to get along and it changes and expands in accordance with its historical depth and geographical vastness. The fact that a language interacts with other languages due to various social and political reasons result in changes in its internal and external structures. Sounds, modal and lexical elements transmitted across the languages make up the fundamentals of these changes. Lexical elements make up the majority of structures that are transmitted from one language to another. They are also the representations of cultural connection. Borrowing elements from other languages is a way of lexicalisation. The speaker takes the loanword either as it is used in the source language or by means of adding, compounding or semantic change in accordance with the features of his or her native language and considers it as the equivalent of the new one. Starting from the fact that Turkish is an agglutinative language, this study investigated loanwords considering them as word roots for their potentials for derivation according to rules of Turkish. Loanwords in Turkish dictionary were first identified based on their having an affix or not and then indexed. By demonstrating how affixes unite, how functional affixes in Turkish in deriving new words was revealed and a newly derived affixes dictionary was created.
