Abstract

A METAPHORIZATION EXAMPLE COMMON IN TURKISH AND NEIGHBORING LANGUAGES
According to their meanings, words are divided into two; concrete and abstract. The concepts in human mind that we recognize as abstract, arise from a concrete meaning. However this transition of meaning is obtained through metaphorization. Using various methods, a concrete word may define a different concept by associating it with other concepts. Thus originates the figuritive meaning. The relation between figuritive and basic/concrete meaning is perceived. However, some concepts löse their relevance with basic/concrete meaning after metaphorization, thus they become abstract. At first sight, we are unable to detect the relevance between such abstract meanings and basic/concrete meanings in languages. Only with vocabulary studies can we reveal these meanings. Furthermore, it’s been observed that, in some different languages, some concrete concepts metaphorize and become abstract in the same manner. The words “fog, smoke, füme” in Arabic, Persian and Russian languages which mean “sadness, sarrow, grief” may have the same meaning in Turkish language. “busuş” and “buñ”, which we have identified in ancient and recent vocabulary of Turkish, are abstract words that metaphorized in this way.
