Abstract

VOCABULARY ON DAILY LIFE OF CUMAN / KIPCHAKS IN THE CONTEXT OF CODEX CUMANICUS: ARTICLE NAMES
Codex Cumanicus is an invaluable work in respect to the culture and the linguistic history of the Turkic peoples. It involves data resolving many phonetic problems regarding historical Turkic languages generated by the Arabic script as well as making a significant contribution to the vocabulary of Turkic. The importance of the work would be understood better when it is taken into consideration that the word lists present in the Italian section contain 3201 words including verbs and words about the daily life of the Cuman / Kipchaks. A great proportion of the vocabulary present in the work is based on Cuman / Kipchak Turkic spoken in the 13th century and this increases the value of the work since the fact that most of the historical texts of Turkic were written with the standard language complicates establishing the non-standard forms of the language. Therefore Codex Cumanicus with its non-standard and dialectical data poses an interesting situation. Rich and diverse data gathered directly from the Cuman / Kipchaks by Italian and German merchants and / or monks form one of the finest examples of this distinctness. Codex Cumanicus, which includes linguistic data related to the culture, economy, history, religion and daily life of its period, has been studied many times and is still being studied. This study determines the article names recorded in the work and tackles their structure. Determined article names are also classified due to their field of use. Thus contributes to establishing the social life of the Cuman / Kipchaks in the 13th century by means of words.
