ANALYSIS AND COMPARISON OF TEXTS IN PRIMARY SCHOOL 3RD AND 4TH GRADE TEXTBOOKS IN TERMS OF PATRIOTISM

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the texts in the primary school 3rd and 4th grade Turkish textbooks taught by the Ministry of National Education in the 2022-2023 academic year in terms of patriotism value. In the study, qualitative research method was used and the texts were analyzed by document analysis technique. In the data analysis, the attitudes and behaviors associated with the patriotism value by the Board of Education and Discipline constituted the thematic framework. In the study, textbooks of MEB Publications and Gizem Publishing at the 3rd grade level, and textbooks of MEB Publications and Özgün Publishing at the 4th grade level were analyzed. A total of 160 texts were analyzed in the four textbooks and it was observed that 37 of these texts referred to the value of patriotism. The references to the value of patriotism in the texts are similar in terms of the distribution of publishers at both 3rd and 4th grade levels. At the 4th grade level, it was observed that more references were made to the value of patriotism. In addition, in terms of text types, it was observed that 4th grade texts consisted of informative texts more than 3rd grade texts. Finally, regardless of the grade and publishing, it was determined that the texts referring to the value of patriotism were not equally distributed in terms of themes.
