Özet

This study mainly aims to determine the relationship between communication skills and interpersonal problem solving skills. In addition, communication skills and interpersonal problem solving skills are evaluated by age, gender, and status of exposure to domestic violence. The research sample consisted of 444 participants (257 females and 187 males) studying at various faculties of Ondokuz Mayıs University in the 2013-2014 academic year. The Personal Information Collection Form, the Interpersonal Problem Solving Inventory, and the Communication Skills Evaluation Scale were administered to the participants. The independent groups t-test, the Pearson Correlation Analysis and Multiple Linear Regresssion Analysis were used in data analysis. The research findings indicate that among interpersonal problem solving sub-dimensions, Negative Approach to Problems (NAP) and Lack of Self-confidence (LSC) significantly predict communication skills in a negative way, and Constructive Problem Solving (CPS) and Insistent-persevering Approach (IPA) significantly predict them in a positive way. In addition, it is seen that LSC scores significantly varied by gender, and the males participating in the study had higher LSC score averages in comparison to the females. It was found out that communication skills varied by gender, too, and the females had higher communication skills score averages in comparison to the males. Interpersonal problem solving scores did not significantly vary by exposure to domestic violence. The participants who stated that they were not exposed to domestic violence had higher communication skills score averages in comparison to those participants who stated that they were exposed to domestic violence. No significant difference was found between age and interpersonal problem solving skills and communication skills score averages. Future studies may examine interpersonal problem solving skills and communication skills, which have multidimensional natures, on different samples by taking into consideration certain psycho-social factors. In general, the research findings show that training programs and practices are needed to improve the problem solving and communication skills of individuals.
