Özet

The speech of the Iraqi Turkmens is classified among the Azarbaijani Turkish dialects. Iraqi Turkmen dialects are divided into two in accordance with transition of the consonants from “?” to “v” and “y”. Legal status of the language of the Turkmens, who live there for 1400 years, is on the level of a local language. The Iraqi Turkmen speech, which is member of the South wing of the Eastern Oğuz group, is outstanding with its preserving many old Turkic elements.
